Family Dynamics
The PNW forests have a very thick and protective layer of understory which has a lot of Salal (Gaultheria shallon) During big rainfall, this forest layer prevents flooding with its intertwined, imperfect stems and high surface area of leaves. In the hot dry summers, this layer acts as a protective moisture trap to the ground below.
The thick shrubbery layer is complicated and can sometimes be difficult for other species to navigate and coexist with. However, balance within its biological community and family dynamic is still found in a graceful, constructed chaos.
